Canadian Voters unite behind ‘Anyone But Harper’ campaign

23 Sep

Stephen Harper is not so popular with the new media crowd.  In fact the fear of his party becoming the majority has spawned the development of movement online.    Those behind the Anyone but Harper campaign are worried about an American inspired dismantling of arts and media funding which will cripple the emerging new media industry.

If the effort continues to gain steam it could present a threat to Harper’s ambitions given the party’s apparent failure to understand the dynamics of the Internet.  Their attempts to use the Internet to build support for the party have been ham fisted and clumsy.  Recently supporters for Harper attempted to put out a viral video which was widely mocked.

The Anyone but Harper website says:

We are a non-partisan group of Canadians appalled at the thought that Stephen Harper might form the next government of Canada. We want anyonebutHarper.ca to tell Canadians about the consequences of a Harper win, to help Canadians maximize the value of their vote on October 14, and to mobilize the creativity of anti-Harper Canadians.

We started as a group of digital media folks noodling on Facebook about an anti-harper campaign, largely video and technology based. Specifically, we were and are interested in making sure people vote strategically. Today, we number in the hundreds — from video artists, new media designers, musicians, programmers; from Liberals, NDPrs, Greens and Bloc. We come from all across Canada. And we invite you to join us!

We’re not the only group doing this, by the way. Vote for Environment, Department of Culture and even the CAW are all urging Canadians to vote strategically. If we work together, we may prevent a Harper majority government from becoming a fait accompli.
